This is where the rubber meets the road. I've noticed the biggest difference in my sound when I've changed cartridges. Why? Because the cartridge is the first thing that affects the playback, so everything after that is dependent on what your needles sound like. There are two main types of styli; spherical (think of a basketball riding in the groove) and elliptical (football-shaped that rides longways in the groove.) Spherical is the common choice for djing, as it produces less record wear during backcueing and generally holds the groove better. Elliptical is the only choice for archiving and recording, as it offers an improved sound.
